Digipaks create a tactile, fold-out album presentation with broad panels for photography, illustration, lyrics and credits. They are popular with artists wanting more of a statement than a simple sleeve.
At DiskCrafters, the packaging, direct-to-disc printing and duplication are produced and assembled as one project. You choose the quantity and options instead of taking on a factory-size order.

Digipak materials, artwork, printed discs and production choices explained.
A digipak is a printed-board CD package that folds open to reveal a fitted disc tray. It creates a more artwork-led experience than a simple plastic wallet, because the front, rear and inside panels can form one coordinated design. The familiar four-panel style is popular for albums, EPs and collector editions where the packaging should be part of the release rather than only protecting the disc.
DiskCrafters produces the disc and packaging as part of the same short-run manufacturing workflow, so the print finish, artwork and chosen quantity can be configured together. The disc is a professionally duplicated optical CD, while the digipak is printed, creased and assembled separately. A one-off copy follows the same basic packaging principles as a larger run, making it possible to assess a real sample before selling an edition.
Think of a digipak as a physical layout with a front cover, back cover and two internal panels. Artwork can flow across the fold, but the crease changes how the image is viewed when the package is partly open. Plan the front cover to work as a standalone visual and the internal panels to reward somebody who opens the case. Album credits, lyrics, photography or illustrations can sit on different panels rather than competing for space on a single square cover.
The disc face also needs deliberate design. A minimal title treatment may complement an illustrated package better than copying the cover onto the disc. Conversely, if the record is a bright graphic release, a full-colour printed CD can tie the whole presentation together. Check the artwork template for the precise panel layout and avoid relying on measurements from a streaming album cover or an unrelated manufacturer's dieline.
The board construction is what gives a digipak its distinctive feel. It has printed panels that fold around a plastic tray, giving an album a slim profile and an opening action that differs from a hinged jewel case. The strength and appearance of the finished package depend on the board, grain, printed ink, crease and the way the parts are assembled. Those manufacturing details are worth considering when you are designing across a fold.
Try not to position tiny lettering directly on a crease or place essential text too close to an edge. A clean internal layout leaves enough visual space around the tray and doesn't treat the folded package like four perfectly flat separate squares. If you're planning a special finish or an unusual orientation, contact the production team before exporting artwork so you can work to the correct physical construction.
Professional CD duplication and professional disc printing are different production steps. The audio is prepared and recorded onto a suitable disc, and the disc artwork is printed directly onto its printable surface. Full-colour matte or glossy options can match photographic or illustrated covers; classic black-on-silver thermal printing gives a deliberately restrained look for minimalist releases.
A vinyl-style CD finish may be available as an option on selected products if you want a retro visual theme. It is still a CD, not a miniature vinyl record. If you have an unusual printed-disc idea, look at the available variations within the live digipak configurator and choose the finish that suits both the cover and the expected players. Remember that print artwork, rather than a vinyl record's analogue grooves, creates the aesthetic.
A conventional digipak uses a fitted tray to hold the disc. A digisleeve generally provides a sleeve or pocket construction in printed board without the same tray; a digifile is another tray-free board packaging format. They all offer a more tactile alternative to plastic jewel cases, but the opening, disc-retention method, panel arrangement and finished shape are different.
Choose a digipak when you want the disc to click into a tray and the panels to feel like a compact printed book. A digisleeve or digifile may make more sense when you want an all-board presentation without a conventional tray. Compare photographs of the actual finished products, not just generic mock-ups, and download the right template for the format you select.
One of the biggest barriers to a traditional physical release is being required to order far more copies than an audience can realistically buy. DiskCrafters has no minimum on its standard digipak product, allowing a musician to start with a single design proof or a short release quantity. A band can prepare copies for a launch night and reorder rather than committing to a warehouse of inventory.
Look at the total package price for your actual quantity, not only the lowest per-disc figure advertised for a large run. The final cost depends on the chosen disc finish, available packaging options and any extras. Our product pages show the selectable variations and total before checkout, and the dedicated pricing guide makes it easier to compare digipaks with jewel cases and lighter sleeves.
Before ordering, finalise your panel layout, use the matching digipak artwork template and include the required bleed beyond the intended cut edges. Keep names, lyrics, logos and small lettering inside the safe area and check that the spine or folds don't interrupt essential information. Work in a file format supported by the upload system and inspect the artwork at actual print size, not only zoomed in on a monitor.
Audio should be equally final. Confirm the album sequence, track names, gaps and master versions before submission; last-minute changes can affect the production schedule. CD-Text can be included where offered, but it should not be confused with online database registration. If you've never prepared artwork for printed board before, the DiskCrafters templates and artwork design service can help you avoid common file-preparation mistakes.
Once the order and supplied files are approved, DiskCrafters handles disc duplication, direct-to-disc printing and the printed-board packaging process in-house in Greater Manchester. Different finishes and quantities have different production requirements. When the order is complete, it is packed for shipping to the selected address, including international destinations where offered.
If your digipaks are intended for a release show, tour or pre-order dispatch, don't rely on an assumed production date. Contact the team before checkout with the actual deadline, packaging choice and expected quantity so availability can be discussed. Keep your final approved audio and artwork available for a later restock; a short-run approach works particularly well when audience demand is still developing.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Diskcrafters are quite literally the best in the entire industry. Being on demand, affordable, based in the UK, all with insane customisation like the option for metadata, genuine Digipaks, Vinyl-style CDs, and Clear jewel cases, it’s easy to see why I rate them so highly. All of these seem like basic necessities for a normal CD, and yet the market nowadays seemed so deprived of it until Diskcrafters came along.
